Halloween without clubbing: Vancouver & Burnaby 2026

Halloween without a club night can mean a decorated evening walk, a garden date, making something to keep or an enthusiastic amount of screaming. The useful decision is what everyone actually wants to do. Our four researched options suit different budgets and scare preferences; none is presented as an adults-only event.

Pick your kind of Halloween date

• Gentle evening atmosphere: Haunted Village in Burnaby. Our lower-cost evening pick for a mixed-tolerance pair.
• Daylight, conversation and a little folklore: VanDusen’s self-guided Spooky Plants walk. Our choice when you want an autumn outing with a Halloween theme, not a haunted attraction.
• A project to take home: Nikkei’s October 3 temari workshop. Our indoor choice for people who enjoy making things and concentrating on a small craft.
• Scares and rides: Fright Nights. Choose it because both people want that experience; it is a poor compromise for someone trying to avoid being frightened.

These are judgments based on the published formats, not personal scare ratings. We have not attended the 2026 activities.

Haunted Village: a gentler evening for two

Burnaby’s Haunted Village runs October 23–25 and 30–31, 2026, 4–9 p.m., at 6501 Deer Lake Avenue. The city describes spooky, family-friendly displays without gore or strobe effects. The carousel is not operating.

Advance admission is $24 for two adults, or $30 on the day; checkout extras remain unconfirmed. Food costs extra, but you may bring your own for the grounds, outside the café.

Book ahead: gate tickets and parking are limited. It runs in rain; a ticket change costs $2 per person. Our suggested allowance is 1½–2 hours, not an organizer-stated duration. Wander, compare displays and pause when you like. Expect a shared family event rather than a secluded date.

VanDusen: a daytime Halloween alternative

The garden’s September/October 2026 Spooky Plants tour is a self-guided route through plant folklore, following numbered arrows. This is a current daytime garden activity, not a night-time light show. Our suggestion is to take turns reading the stops and allow 1½–2 hours for a garden visit, with the pace yours to choose.

The listed April–October adult admission is $15.81 plus GST, or $31.62 plus GST for two adults aged 19–64. The city advertises $1 off each adult ticket bought online in advance; check the final total for your selected date. The published self-guided walk is available to read online, with no separate tour booking listed. Regular admission does not cover separately ticketed special events.

At 5251 Oak Street, garden hours through October 31 are 9 a.m.–5 p.m., last entry 4:30 p.m. Picnics are allowed, so bringing food can keep the outing budget predictable. It remains an outdoor plan. Some parts of the themed route are not wheelchair accessible; ask staff about alternatives. Choose it for walking and stories, rather than expecting performers or a staged haunt.

Nikkei: stitch something seasonal indoors

The Halloween temari workshop at Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre in Burnaby lists October 3, 2026, 10 a.m.–1 p.m. or 2–5 p.m. Beginners stitch a firework- or spider-inspired design onto a prepared ball. Materials and an instruction booklet to keep are included.

The listed non-member price is $51.25 each: $102.50 for two, before any unconfirmed checkout charges. Reserve two places in the same session; remaining spaces are not verified. Arrive at least five minutes early. The centre is at 6688 Southoaks Crescent.

Our pick when a three-hour craft project sounds more appealing than an outdoor queue. The payoff is making a keepsake and learning a technique; it is a dated workshop, so it cannot serve as a spontaneous rain backup throughout October. See our cultural-outings guide for more class formats.

Fright Nights: pay for the scares you want

Fright Nights advertises admission from $39 per person, or from $78 for two, before any checkout charges and extras. That starting price is not available every night. The 2026 calendar covers selected dates October 7–31, opening at 6 p.m. and ending at 11 p.m. or midnight by date. Admission includes haunted houses and rides.

The optional advance Rapid Pass is $56 extra each, or $112 for two, and provides one priority entry per haunted house and five selected rides. At the advertised minimum admission, adding two passes brings the ticket subtotal to $190 before checkout extras. It is not a stand-alone admission ticket. Buy it only if priority access is worth that difference to you.

Plan this as the main evening. The operator warns that weekends are busiest, queues can be substantial and completing every attraction is not guaranteed. Agree on a few priorities instead of making the night a completion exercise.

Fright Nights arrival and weather costs

The guest rules recommend ages 13+. Enter at Hastings and Windermere; parking is $15. Bags larger than 8.5 × 11 inches are prohibited inside, with mandatory storage $10 per item. Outside food and re-entry are prohibited, so eat beforehand if that suits your budget.

Read the costume policy before dressing up: masks and face-concealing makeup are prohibited, with additional restrictions on attire. Cameras are not permitted on rides or inside attractions. Weather can close rides or the park without rain cheques or refunds. Check the forecast and essential access arrangements before paying.

Make the plan work for both of you

Agree on intensity, transport home and the full spending limit before booking. A more expensive ticket is not a reason to pressure somebody into a scare attraction. Add meals and transport to all the admission figures above; none is a complete dinner-date budget.
