Granville Island date: ferry, improv and the market

Our pick for a date with several small pleasures: take the little ferry, wander Granville Island and let food or a show give the outing its shape. The boat ride makes an ordinary dinner plan feel like going somewhere. You can keep the afternoon flexible, but the market and last ferry will not wait for the plot twist.

First, the Backstage Lounge update

The Backstage stop belongs to the founder’s 2019 memory above. Today, Arts Club lists Backstage Lounge as an event-rental venue. We have not verified a regular public bar-and-show programme there. Do not turn up expecting the old inexpensive night out to be available.

There are current alternatives on the island: The Improv Centre for a ticketed comedy show, or Sandbar for a restaurant with a published live-music schedule. They are separate options, not a claimed relocation or replacement of Backstage.

Take the ferry from around Science World

For a present-day version of that departure, Aquabus’s Olympic Village dock is beside Science World, near Main Street–Science World station. These are the small False Creek ferries, not SeaBus.

Aquabus’s published adult fares between The Village and Granville Island are $8.50 one-way or $16 return. Two adult returns total $32, before your food, show and connecting transport. Tax treatment is not separately stated on the fare page. Check the route when buying; a day pass is a different product.

Already downtown? The shorter Hornby Street–Granville Island crossing is listed at $8.50 return per adult, or $17 for two. That can lower the boat cost if it suits your actual starting point; it changes the journey from the founder’s Science World-area version.

False Creek Ferries is another operator serving the island. Select your actual origin and destination in its planner. We have not verified its Science World-area route price, and the companies’ tickets and schedules should not be treated as interchangeable.

Afternoon date: choose dinner together, then take it home

Our suggested window is around 2:30–5:30 p.m.: arrive, browse, decide what sounds good and buy the chilled ingredients near the end. This is planning advice, not a reserved itinerary. The Public Market generally opens 9 a.m.–6 p.m., with holiday exceptions and individual merchant hours to check.

Give dinner a simple structure: one main, something green and perhaps something for afterwards. You do not need to buy one of everything just because it looks good behind glass.

• Fresh pasta and sauce: Zara’s Deli is a current market option for pasta, sauces and antipasti.
• Seafood: Longliner Seafoods lists fresh and smoked seafood. Ask what fits your cooking plan and budget.
• Meat or poultry: Tenderland Meats is another main-course option; compare portions and counter prices before choosing.
• Vegetables and fruit: Sunlight Farms gives you a produce stop for the rest of the meal.

These are researched shopping suggestions, not the founder’s remembered merchants. We have not priced a complete dinner basket. Agree on a grocery cap before browsing and check the total as you go. Bring reusable bags and an insulated bag with ice packs for perishables, then head home promptly. Save the late show for the other version of the outing.

Evening date: dinner and improv

The Improv Centre currently lists its theatre at 1502 Duranleau Street. The 1575 Johnston Street address is its administration office. We have not confirmed a recent theatre relocation; use the address on the actual ticket.

The current programme includes 7 p.m. shows on selected dates and Theatresports at 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Shows normally run 90 minutes including an interval; check exceptions. The bar opens an hour before the first show. Choose the show’s age/content guidance as well as its time; under-19s must be accompanied by an adult.

Published regular ticket bands, including taxes and ticket fees, are $15/$20/$25 sliding scale on Tuesdays, $25 Wednesday/Thursday, and $33.50 for theatre seats or $40 for table/bench seats Friday/Saturday. Special productions can differ and seats are not guaranteed.

For two adults, the lowest published Tuesday tier plus the Science World-area return ferry is a $62 subtotal; two regular Friday/Saturday theatre seats plus that ferry are $99. Those examples exclude dinner, drinks and connecting transport, and depend on the chosen show’s actual price. They are not complete date-night packages.

Our suggested sequence is dinner first, then the booked show. A 7 p.m. performance normally ending around 8:30 gives more return options than a 9 p.m. show, but still check the actual sailing. Aquabus’s Granville Island route page currently lists 9:15 p.m. as the last departure toward Olympic Village. A 9 p.m. show needs a land journey home; do not buy return ferry tickets assuming they cover the whole evening.

Prefer live music with your food?

Sandbar, at 1535 Johnston Street, Creekhouse #102, lists music from 7 p.m. Monday–Thursday, 4:30 p.m. Friday/Saturday and 3:30 p.m. Sunday, with later sets on the weekend. Confirm the chosen day’s programme and seating.

Its happy-hour menu runs Monday–Friday, 3–5 p.m., excluding holidays. Two listed $6 drinks and shared $7.50 fries make a $19.50 menu subtotal before tax and tip. That is a small drink-and-snack stop, not dinner or a guaranteed no-cover music package. Friday’s published music start overlaps the last half-hour of happy hour; on other weekdays music starts after the market closes.
